Biographie
La poésie de Josephine LoRe a été partagée sur scène et mondialement. Elle est l’auteure de quatre recueils : Unity ; The Cowichan Series, gagnant du prix Meilleur vendeur du Calgary Herald ; In My Father's House, gagnant du prix Bestseller en Alberta ; et dernièrement The Moon and All Her Faces. Son poème « Enough » a été choisi par Feed the Children USA pour une vidéo publicitaire qui a reçu nombreux prix, et Josephine a été nominée pour le prix de poésie Pushcart 2025.
Elle a participé dans La Poésie Volcanique, une présentation de poésie en français à l’Université de Calgary en avril 2025, et a été invitée à présenter ses poèmes sur scène dans plusieurs villes au Canada, aux Etats-Unis et en Italie.
Ses poèmes ont été publiés dans des revues littéraires et des anthologies à travers quinze pays et en cinq langues. Ses paroles ont été mises en musique, dansées et intégrées dans des œuvres d’art visuel. Poète lyrique, Josephine crée des symphonies avec son choix de mots, la sublimité des images figuratives et le rythme de ses paroles. Ses poèmes sont souvent basés sur la nature et explorent ses relations avec le monde ainsi que ses origines siciliennes.
Josephine est membre de The League of Canadian Poets, The Writers’ Guild of Alberta et diverses associations de poésie à Calgary et en ligne. Elle a étudié les langues et la littérature à l’Université de Toronto et a complété sa maîtrise en poésie comparative à l’Université de Rouen. En 2022, elle a pris sa retraite après plus de trente ans d’enseignement dans des écoles d’immersion française à Calgary, où elle enseignait les lettres. Depuis, elle sert en tant que Professeur-Conseillère pour la faculté d’éducation, et comme Artiste en Résidence / Poésie dans les écoles francophones.
Josephine LoRe has shared her poetry live and internationally. Her words have been put to music, danced, and integrated into visual art. She has four collections: Unity; Calgary Herald Bestseller The Cowichan Series; Alberta Bestseller In My Father's House, and her latest, The Moon and All Her Faces.
Her words have been published in 15 countries and 5 languages. Her poem “Enough” was chosen by Feed the Children for a multiple award-winning Public Service Announcement video in the US, and she was invited to be a feature presenter at La Poésie Volcanique at the University of Calgary in April 2025. Josephine has been nominated for a 2025 Pushcart Poetry Prize.
Josephine participates in a panoply of poetry societies. She serves as editor, teacher, panelist, and judge, and mentors emerging writers. Since her retirement from the classroom in 2022, she has served as Faculty Advisor for French Immersion student-teachers and Artist in Residence / Poetry for Calgary schools. Over the last year, she has had the honour of travelling to present her poetry on stages across Canada, in the US and Europe.

Oui, quand j’étais jeune, j’écoutais et je lisais de la poésie et j’en ressentais une forte connexion… À travers les mots choisis, les images, la sonorité, la métaphore, je comprenais le sentiment du poète, et j’en étais souvent émue. Un poète dont je me souviens particulièrement est Victor Hugo, avec son poème « Demain, dès l’aube ». J’apprécie aussi énormément l’œuvre poétique du poète québécois Émile Nelligan.
I did read poetry from elementary school all the way through my Master's in Comparative Literature, and what is most memorable to me is a poetry unity in our high school class, where the teacher introduced us to the lyrics of Elton John ("Someone Saved My Life Tonight", "Candle in the Wind" ... ). What struck me was the power of the word to convey and to evoke, through the literal sense but also the layers of figurative language; the sounds and rhythms and resonance and universality of it.
J’ai commencé à écrire de la poésie à l’école primaire. Au secondaire, j’ai créé mon premier recueil. J’avais 13 ans quand mon premier poème a été publié dans une collection de notre bibliothèque de quartier à Toronto. J’ai gagné le prix de poésie Norma Epstein à l’Université de Toronto pendant ma troisième année d’études. Je me suis considérée poète dès que j'ai lu mes poèmes sur scène ici à Calgary, particulièrement quand on a commencé à m’inviter en tant que « poète vedette » pour les soirées de poésie en 2017, et quand mes poèmes ont été publiés non seulement ici au Canada, mais dans divers pays, entre autres, au début, les États-Unis, le Japon et l’Angleterre.
I started writing poetry in elementary school and remember a teacher's reaction when I wrote about the sadness of a tree in the autumn, with the falling of the leaves. That was when I first realized that my imagination and sensibilities were unique. I was 13 years old when my first poem was published in an anthology put together by our neighbourhood library in Toronto, and I created my first collection in high school. I won the Norma Epstein Prize for Creative Writing, Poetry, in my third year at the University of Toronto in my undergrad year.
I returned to poetry after my children had grown, and started to consider myself a poet when I started reading my poems on stage in Calgary, particularly once I was invited to be a Feature Reader, and then again more so once my poetry began to be accepted for publication not only in Canada but in other countries, initially the U.S., Japan, and England.
Une question intéressante… Pour moi, la tâche, c’est d’examiner quelque chose d’essentiel, d’honnête, et de l’exprimer d’une façon où il y a non seulement le côté personnel mais aussi une résonnance universelle, pour que le poème puisse toucher ceux qui l’entendent ou qui le lisent.
This is an interesting question ... For me, the challenge is to examine something essential, something honest, and to express it in a way that represents not only the personal, but also has a universal resonance, so that the poem touches those who hear or listen to it.
Je n’ai pas encore de poème dans votre anthologie, mais je pense au poème que j’ai écrit au Québec « Le chant d’oiseau », qui a été inspiré par le moment où j’ai entendu le chant d’un oiseau inconnu au réveil (j’ai grandi en Ontario et je vis en Alberta). J’ai comparé cette expérience à vouloir connaitre une langue étrangère profondément, y compris ses sublimités et subtilités. Ma famille est sicilienne, et le sicilien est donc ma langue maternelle. Ensuite, j’ai appris l’italien, le français et puis l’anglais. Je parle un peu espagnol, et j’ai suivi un cours de russe. Les langues m’ont toujours intriguée, les liens qui se forment dans le cerveau quand on passe d’une langue à l’autre, et la beauté intrinsèque de chaque langue.
I don't have a poem in the anthology yet, but I would like to reflect upon a poem I wrote when we had taken a Grade 9 class on a trip to Quebec, "Le Chant d'Oiseau". I woke up to birdsong, and didn't recognize the song, the bird. I had grown up in Ontario and have lived in Alberta for over thirty years, but this was an unknown bird. And it reminded me that no matter how much I try to learn a foreign language, it is almost impossible to master the subtleties and sublime nuances. My family is from Sicily, so my mother tongue is Sicilian. Then I learned Italian, then French, and next English. I have studied Spanish and took a non-successful course in Russian. Languages have always intrigued me, the connections that form in the brain when we switch from one language to another, and the intrinsic beauty in the sound and meaning of each language.
